Tooth Brushing Tips for Your Kids

Posted on Oct 25 2022

Here are some tips on how to teach your kids to brush their teeth.

1. Get them started early. It's best to start brushing your child's teeth when they're still a baby, but if they already have teeth, it's still not too late. Get them used to the feeling of having their teeth brushed by using a wet washcloth or sponge and water, then move on to using a soft sponge or cloth with just water. Once they're accustomed to the feeling of having their teeth cleaned by a soft brush, begin using toothpaste made especially for children (it doesn't have fluoride).

2. Make it fun! You can make brushing time more enjoyable by letting your child choose his or her own toothbrush and toothpaste flavor (but don't go overboard). Also try brushing with different types of brushes: electric, battery-operated or manual — whatever works best for your child.

3. Set aside time for brushing every day (for example, after breakfast) at a set time each day so your child knows what to expect from you and from himself or herself.

4. Make sure everyone in the family uses the same type of brush and toothpaste, so that everyone has good habits when it comes to dental care.

Start early. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children start brushing their teeth at age 2 or when they get their first tooth (usually between 6 and 8 months of age). This will help them develop good habits early on and prevent cavities later in life. Children should brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice daily — morning and before bedtime — until they are 6 years old or until they've had their first permanent molars emerge (which typically happens around age 6).

Choose a small brush with soft bristles. A toothbrush with soft bristles is gentle on young gums, which can be more sensitive than adult gums. Make sure the head of the brush is small enough so that your child can comfortably reach all areas of his mouth without having to strain or lean over the sink too far.
